Monroe County Museum Local History with a National Impact

The Monroe County Museum is located in downtown Monroe, Michigan. As you walk through the Museum, you traverse through time. The exhibits shed light on the area’s unique and vibrant past and significant role in American history. The Museum is housed in a Georgian-style building that was constructed in 1911. The building was first used as the area’s post office and library. In 1938, the Monroe County Museum opened to the public.

Exhibits of full-room displays with furniture and items from the time are very informative. These exhibits help us visualize the reality of different periods and cultures.

Monroe’s strategic location on the River Raisin made it a hub for industrial growth and transportation. The Museum’s exhibits detail the development of local industries, the impact of the railroad, and the rise of the automobile industry, all of which played a significant role in Monroe’s economic growth.

Visiting the Museum

The Monroe County Museum is conveniently located in downtown Monroe, Michigan. You can park behind the building in either the public lot or the few spots in the museum parking lot. Admission is free for the public, and navigating the building is easy. There are two floors of exhibits. The main floor is dedicated to the earliest people living in the area, the settlers who came after them, and the industrial exhibits important to the area. Upstairs is the Civil War and Custer exhibit and some “open storage” pieces to show you how different items are stored in a museum.

If you enjoy history, you will want to plan some extra time in Monroe. In addition to the Monroe County Museum, there are historical markers around the city and other museums. Monroe has played a significant role in American History. We suggest you begin at the River Raisin National Battlefield Museum, which focuses on an important battle of the War of 1812, fought in 1813 in Monroe. Head into the information center and grab a copy of the River Raisin Heritage Trail System brochure to help you explore the rest of the area. Only 40 years after this significant battle, 14-year-old George Custer moved to Monroe to live with his sister so that he could attend school. He still spent the summers with his father and siblings in Ohio, but Monroe became his hometown. General Custer has a long and interesting history that is far more complex than one would think.
