Former Auto Repair Shop Now Funky Coffee Shop: The Electric Coffee Company
The Electric Coffee Company is nestled in a quiet neighborhood north of the downtown riverfront area of Port Huron, Michigan. It is only a hop, a skip, and a jump from the Lighthouse Park and Beach. Grab something to sip while you enjoy the wind and the waves of beautiful Lake Huron any time of the year.
Nods to Former Auto Shop
The Electric Coffee Company building was once a Shell Gas Station and Auto Repair Shop built in the 1930s. We love that the bones of the old building are still evident, including many of the auto shop features, such as the heavy-duty chain hoist hanging over the now-established roasting area.
Entering The Electric Coffee Company
The door opens to what was once the customer service area of the old Shell Station. The Electric Coffee Company merchandise and other collectible or giftable items fill the former convenience or waiting area. As you walk in, tasty, sweet treats beckon behind the glass display case, and the barista greets you with a cheerful welcome.
A menu on the counter offers the seasonal creations suggested for your enjoyment, or you can craft your own. We chose a couple of coffees and some treats and headed out to the seating area.
Greenery around the Shop
Green plants tucked in here and there soften up the hard lines of the shop. A working retro tabletop arcade game greets you as you enter the seating area in the refurbished auto service bays. Books nestled in nooks and exposed pipes catch your attention.
Atmosphere at The Electric Coffee Company
The sharp, solid features of the old Service Station contrasted in just the right way with the artful decorations to create a funky, and happy place to have a sip and a treat. The music was a bit retro, which added to the fun atmosphere. The smells were only of coffee; no oil or gasoline smells were left in this little shop.
There is not much room in the entry to wait for your order, so the customers waited in the seating area of the old service bays. One father and son played a quick game of Pac-Man. Several other people sat at the tables; some took photos. Everyone was relaxed and happy while they waited for their drinks. Both the funky space and the baristas contribute to the pleasant atmosphere here.
Tasty and Pleasant Visit
We enjoyed the freshly brewed and shop-roasted coffee and our sweets as we looked around at all the objects that made this little coffee shop a delight to visit. Our coffee was delicious. The filled mini donuts and the Lemon Blueberry roll were all tasty.
We recommend a stop at The Electic Coffee Company. They have a website you can check out, but their Facebook page is much more active and has a lot of helpful information.
Stop on by the next time you are in or passing through the north end of Port Huron; you will be glad you did. Make sure to add them as a stop on your Port Huron daytrip itinerary!
