Hiking/Walking

Oakwood Lake Park has a rustic feel, and although its website has a map, the onsite trails are mostly unmarked. The Flint River runs through the park, with a lake at the northern end. Dress appropriately and be prepared to hunt around for the trails at times. Since the park sees less traffic than many others, you may have a better chance of spotting more wildlife (and less people, if that’s your jam.)

Gate to trails and Disc Golf Course at Oakwood Lake Park

Disc Golf

One of the main “trails” is actually the disc golf course, Dogman’s Den 18-hole course. Be aware of other people who may be playing the course. The course is a favorite for those who like the quiet, empty woods. Like the trails, there aren’t clear signs for the disc golf course. This gem is so hidden that even many locals aren’t aware that it is there. The website does not mention the disc golf course, but our family has played it several times. This course is at the top of our list of courses when discussing where to go. From the north end of the parking lot, follow the wide pathway that looks like a two-track north to a tall fence gate. Step around the right end of the gate (totally fine, the gate is to stop cars, not people), and the first teepad of the golf course is to the left side of the trail.

Nature Viewing and Fishing

An observation and fishing pier at hole 8 offers peaceful views, fishing, or a quiet resting place. The lake is also a spot for ice fishing in the winter. The lake has mostly Large Mouth Bass but also includes Rock Bass, Pumpkin Seed, and Green Sunfish.

The last time we were at Oakwood Lake Park, we arrived at the same time as another vehicle. We were the only ones in the lot. It was a perfect Michigan summer day – 75 and sunny, low humidity. Perfect day to be outdoors. The other person mentioned that he had been to several other disc golf courses, all packed to the brim in the nearby areas, so he came out to this park and had it to himself.
